Look, growing up, I had no problem with puppets. It’s not like I was afraid of them. It’s just that they sort of kept me up at night if I saw one at any point past 6 p.m. Strange? Yes. But appropriate? Perhaps; considering I grew up in a neighborhood that had, at various points in the last decade, been home to creepy clowns, hunched over ice cream truck drivers and the like.
Needless to say, when we started taking care of our niece a lot, I didn’t want her to feel the same sort of weirdness around puppets that I had. And actually, it turns out she was a big fan of them to begin with. Her mom told us that when she goes to the pediatric dentist, she brings along a few homemade sock puppets to keep her entertained while the dentist does his work.
Not a bad idea.
Anyway, it goes without saying that there are plenty of times in life when you need a good sock puppet distraction. And because not all of us love the polished, coiffed look of a store-bought sock puppet, we have DIY alternatives to fill our days and memories.
